MAKE YOUR OWN GUNTER SCALE ...

Gunter Scale

Now everyone wants their own Gunter Scale! On these pages I'll explain to you how you can construct your own Gunter Scale, so that you have something physical to play round with. Thanks must go to Ron Manley for allowing me to use some detailed scans of the Gunter Scale in his collection. Make sure you visit Ron's Slide Rule Site.

Please Note Well ... Warning!
Although these are detailed scans and measurements have been made to scale it to the correct length, there will still be inaccuracies. This is one aspect which cannot be avoided when trying to scale photographs or scans, you will find that the scales on some parts will be very accurate whereas on other sections will be somewhat inaccurate. However, the purpose is only to produce a scale/rule by which we can perform calculations and gauge some idea of how the Gunter Scale/Rule worked.

The steps to make this scale are very simple:

    1. Download the two images Gunter Front (2.96 MB JPG) and Gunter Back (1.57 MB JPG) or download both images in this Gunter File (4.52 MB ZIP)
    2. Insert these images into software which is capable of printing a banner e.g. Microsoft Publisher, or if you have an A3 printer, any application. I used Microsoft Publisher to print the graphic as a banner with 1cm overlap.
    3. Make sure that you set the width of each image to 30.48 cm, this will then scale the graphic correctly.
    4. Print the images at the highest possible resolution your printer is capable of.
    5. Using an art knife and metal rule, carefully cut the pieces out and join.
    6. Glue the sides to a piece of stiff card or thin wood.
    7. There you have it ... your own Gunter Scale!

Now that you have your Gunter Scale, you are ready to start playing round with it.
