The Mad Rabbit

Who likes doing division?  Not too many.  Most times we find that division is more difficult than multiplication.  One reason is that we can learn multiplication tables easily and then quickly roll them out, but when it comes to division, we have to think about them first.

The good news is that doing division with a slide rule is just as easy as doing multiplication, just a simple slip of the slide, but before we get into things, let's look at some of the special words associated with division.

Divisor:
The divisor is the number we are dividing by.

For example, if we had the problem

72 ÷ 9 = 8

We would say that 9 is the divisor because we are dividing it into 72.

Dividend:
The dividend is the number we are dividing into.

So in the example above,
we say that 72 is the dividend.

Quotient:
The quotient is the answer to a division problem.

So if 72 ÷ 9 = 8, then 8 is the quotient.

Okay, we're ready now to check out division ...
