To find the square of a number we normally use the D scale and the A scale, although you can also do the same thing with the C scale and the B scale. The reason we use A and D together is because they are both on the body of the slide rule and don't move. The B and C are on the slider and mover together, so depending what sort of situation you are in, you can use either pair of scales.
Let's try an easy one to start ...
42 = 4 x 4
-
Slide the cursor to 4 on the D scale.
-
Now read the answer under the hairline on the A scale ... 16!
Notice that I moved the slider out of the way so you can see it clearly, but you don't need to do this normally.
You can do this on the slider too ... watch!
Okay, now what were those steps again?
-
Move the cursor to the number you want to find the square of on the D scale.
-
Read the answer from the A scale.
-
(Remember you can also use the C and B scales too.)
Okay, let's try another easy one!
72 = 7 x 7
